Measuring OSH Performance with the ANSI-ASSP Z16.1-2022 Standard

Wednesday, September 7th, 2022

There has been no shortage of discussions in the occupational safety community about how to effectively measure performance. Traditional lagging metrics have been under fire but removing them and relying on leading metrics may not be the answer either. As occupational safety professionals thoughtfully consider how they can create metrics that effectively measure their organization’s performance, they are learning that many of the concepts currently relied upon to create and manage occupational safety performance may not be correctly applied.

With the April publication of ANSI/ASSP Z16.1-2022 (Safety and Health Metrics and Performance Measures) a significant leap was made to address the problem. This new standard addresses the challenges with performance measurement and provides roadmap for occupational safety professionals to establish a methodology that considers their organization’s unique needs. It provides a critical framework for developing and implementing effective metrics that are based on an organization’s risk profile, particularly those that can result in a serious injury or fatality, and its management system. It requires connecting metrics to program or process improvements and ensures that the business investment in occupational safety is more effectively demonstrated.
